The Aim of the Awards

The Our World Awards seek to enable pupils to learn about the lives of children and their families in developing countries and how Ireland, through Irish Aid, and 192 other countries in the United Nations are working together to create a safer and fairer world, and a better future for all the world’s children. Pupils as global citizens can play their part by taking part in the Awards and engaging with these issues.

The Theme for 2020-2021



This year’s theme, Partnership for the Goals, invites pupils to learn about the Global Goals and how Irish Aid, the Irish Government’s overseas development cooperation programme, is working hard to improve the lives of people in developing countries.

The Global Goal Getters Magazine

This is our first year launching the Global Goal Getters, an online magazine series by kids, for kids. This child-centred, child-created magazine allows pupils the opportunity to share their learning, insight, creativity and most importantly, their VOICE.
 
After reading our Partnership for the Goals pupils’ magazine and completing the accompanying lesson plan, encourage your pupils to work on a creative piece based on what they’ve learned and discovered. You can help them spread the word, embark on a journey of Global Citizenship and bring us one step closer to implementing the Global Goals for Sustainable Development across Ireland!
 
Submit their entries for a chance to feature in one of three Global Goal Getters magazine issues, released between February 2021 – May 2021. Find out more details in our Taking Part section.

All countries of the United Nations, including Ireland, are now working together to create a better world and a better future for us all by 2030, through the Global Goals for Sustainable Development which build on the achievements of the previous UN Millennium Development Goals.

The thing I like best about the Our World Irish Aid Awards is that it can be a completely child-led initiative. As the project can be in any format and on any area related to the theme, you can really hand the reins over to the children and allow them to research, brainstorm, make decisions and direct the project themselves. I am constantly surprised and impressed by the depth of thought that it stimulates in pupils and levels of global citizenship which it allows them to develop. They also enjoy it so much and I think it’s an experience that will stay with them long after they leave primary school.

I cannot recommend participation in the Our World Awards highly enough. The resources supplied by Irish Aid were the perfect spring board into the world of sustainable global development. The project encompassed all areas of the curriculum and the scope of the project meant that it was child centred at each stage, allowing for a wonderful sense of ownership at the end of the work. The enthusiasm of the participating children, parents and indeed the wider school community which the project created was astounding. A body of work that encourages children to explore the idea that their generation may very well end poverty and be the last generation to address climate change deserves the attention which participation in the Our World Awards facilitates.
